Husbandry Information for D. bifurca

Food requirements

If your standard food is high in nutrients, the D. bifurca flies will probably grow well on it, but since our cornmeal recipe is nutrient poor, we need to use Wheeler-Clayton food.

18 - 25°C is the range they will grow at. They grow slower at the lower temperatures. Embryo to adult will take about 20 days depending upon the temperature.

Pupation conditions

The addition of paper along the side of the vial when there are many larvae present is often necessary.

Special requirements

D. bifurca are difficult to raise because they have long times to sexually maturity - 7 days for females and almost 20 days for males. You must combine old adults with newly eclosed flies when transferring to new vials of food.

D. bifurca females can get particular about egg laying in a new place. When we transfer the females to new vials of food, they sometimes do not oviposit for several days.

D. bifurca adults are very fast moving. You may need anesthetize the adults in order to transfer them to new vials.
