Husbandry Information for D. elegans

Food requirements

We grow these flies on banana Opuntia protein food. They require the extra protein in their diet, but the Opuntia powder is merely a consequence of how our kitchen prepares the food. In the past, these flies were grown on a medium that used chicken kidneys, so if you are familiar with this recipe, it will work.

18 - 25°C is the range they will grow at. They grow slower at the lower temperatures. Embryo to adult will take about 15 days depending upon the temperature.

Pupation conditions

The flies will typically crawl up the sides of the vial in order to pupate, but the addition of paper along the side of the vial when there are many larvae present is helpful.
