Maintaining robusta group flies

Food requirements

We grow these flies on banana Opuntia food. You can prepare the banana-malt food without the cactus powder, because the Opuntia powder is merely a consequence of how our kitchen prepares the food.

18 - 25°C is the range they will grow at. They grow slower at the lower temperatures. Embryo to adult will take about 21 days depending upon the temperature.

Pupation conditions

The flies will typically crawl up the sides of the vial in order to pupate, but only a few adults will be obtained in this way. The addition of paper helps if you are trying to expand the stock. N.B. For the D. sordidula, there must be paper in the vials.

Special requirements

Adults require many days to reach sexual maturity, if you transfer adults to new vials immediately after they eclose you will not get eggs for over a week and the food can go bad. One solution is to combine older adults with newly-eclosed adults when you set up new vials/bottles.
